Troubled Boys and Troubled Girls by States
The number one mistake that parents make when searching boarding schools for troubled teens is that they select a school or program based solely on its proximity to their home. This will cost the parent thousands of wasted dollars, and perhaps years of heartache. The best approach to choosing the right boarding school, program or perhaps even a boot camp for their struggling teenager is to find the school that will best serve the unique issues of their child. All States have different laws governing the children of their State. Most States, especially California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Wisconsin, Illinois, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and Michigan, are what as known as strong “child rights States”. It is always best practice to safe guard our children from all forms of abuse and neglect, but some States have gone too far, stripping the “parents rights”, and thus damaging the family. For any parent from an over zealous child rights State, who has temporarily lost custody of their child, that parent knows that the only thing a child has to do is make a claim of abuse or neglect to a teacher and the child could be removed from his/her home. The removal of the child from the home could happen without any investigation as to the prior to the validity of such claim. To the parent that is not guilty of any wrong doing, the experience is humiliating and extremely painful. Many States do not have “privately owned boarding schools for boys or girls or programs for troubled teens because their State is seen as an over zealous “child rights” State. Therefore, as a parent, do your home work and locate a school or program that is in the best interest of your child, meeting his/her special needs, rather than the closest school to your home.
There is a wide selection of troubled teen programs to choose from in the United States. These programs help struggling teenagers who are entitled, disrespectful, disobedient, defiant towards authority, rebelling against God, are not performing well in school, and have drug and alcohol addictions. Finding the right program for troubled boys or troubled girls is not difficult if you know what problems your teen needs to deal with.
Some programs are academically based, like alternative schools. These schools provide a non-traditional curriculum which offers a more flexible program of study than a traditional school. These schools help teens who have ADHD, emotional disabilities, or are getting in trouble in public schools. Students in these schools are able to learn more effectively because the curriculum suits them better than public school curriculums.
Boot camps are correctional facilities where juvenile delinquents are sentenced by a judge to serve time for breaking the law. Parents can also send their struggling teens here to get treatment. Boot camps for youth are very structured environments with military components which try to modify your troubled teen’s negative behavior. They are short term programs, usually from 90 to 180 days long.

Other programs use a boarding school approach to help teens change their negative behavior. Teen youths in these schools (such as: Catholic Boarding Schools, Private Boarding Schools, and Substance Abuse Programs for Teens) live with their peers in a positive peer culture and study together with them. Boarding school programs usually have excellent academic programs and also teach valuable leadership and life skills.
Other types of troubled teen programs are wilderness therapy programs. These are outdoor programs where teens learn survival skills and how to work through internal conflicts and emotional obstacles to overcome challenges. These schools usually offer academic credit so that your troubled teen is still in an educational environment with the bonus of “experiential learning” which helps teens who have ADHD or other learning disabilities.
For teens that have mental conditions or drug and alcohol dependencies, there are residential treatment centers and therapeutic boarding schools. These are long-term, highly structured lockdown facilities where struggling teens receive intense therapy for their problems. The long duration of the program is more appropriate for teens with serious problems which need a longer amount of time to rehabilitate.
